TechnologyIn the first installment of this series, I introduced Henry Laurence Gantt, a little remembered character from the early twentieth century’s efficiency movement. I explained how Gantt parted ways with his much better known mentor, Frederick Winslow Taylor—The Father of Scientific Management, who preached a One Best Way approach. Gantt’s experience had shown that there were a variety of ways to improve operations, and that each shop’s improvements were necessarily unique and incomplete. Gantt labeled as Stunt Peddlers the consultants who rode the efficiency movement’s popularity by teaching One Best Way tricks of the trade. He championed more sensible and effective approaches.
